Check out one of the greatest best-selling short story of india !
Introduction : This story defies a conversation between a corrupt Indian police officer and a common citizen which has a strong justifying ending .
Here we go :
Pandey, what is the collection till now?" asked the tired police inspector sitting in the night patrol vehicle.
"Just Rs. 1200, sir," replied the constable in a desperate tone.
"This has been the worst day! It's already 11pm. Screw this job and this ungrateful department. After 15 years of service I'm still roaming on this secluded road at this ghastly hour like a freaking owl without any income."
"Night is still young, sir. Let's wait and see, we may get lucky."
"I hope so. Can't fetch a decent food and whisky for Rs. 1200."
*few minutes pass*
"Sir, a car is approaching."
"Awesome! Stop it and let me handle this. Hope it's a BMW. Rich brats are the best when it comes to quick bucks."
"Sir, it's an old fiat."
"F*** my life!"
The constable signals at the car. The old fiat comes to a halt.
"Sir, any problem?" inquired the man in his mid-fifties sitting in the driver's seat, "...because my son here has a bus to catch."
"Saheb is calling. Get your papers," constable demands, ignoring their plea.
The man, accompanied by his son, takes the papers, walks to the patrol vehicle and hands it over to the inspector.
"Sir, my son is getting late for the bus, he is leaving to Hyderabad for a training, please make it quick."
"hmm...let me see... licence, check; insurance, check; RC, check; PUC, chec... wait a minute... your PUC certificate expired yesterday... why isn't it renewed? you want to pollute this great country?"
"Sir, I came to know about it only today morning, but all the testing centres were closed. I am sorry. I will get it done first thing tomorrow morning. Now please let us go we are already running late."
"I can't help. Why didn't you get it done yesterday? Now you must pay the fine... Rs. 500."
The man rolls his eyes, reluctantly opens his wallet, takes out a 500 note and hands it over to the inspector and proceeds to leave. His son stops him, turns to the inspector and asks, "Sir, we would like a receipt."
"Receipt? Who do you think you are talking to, boy?"
"Sir, I am entitled to a receipt."
"If you need a receipt it would be Rs. 1000."
"Very well, here..." the son hands over another 500 note.
The inspector pockets the note and says, "I don't have the receipt book right now. Come to station tomorrow and collect it."
"This is ridiculous. I want the receipt now," the son raises his voice.
"Fuck you and be careful!, don't you dare use that tone on me," Inspector was furious.
"Son, don't get into this. You'll miss the bus. Your career is more important than this. Let's go," his father tries to drag his son to the car.
"Sir, you can't abuse me. Don't forget you are a public servant. I could register a complaint against your cheap behaviour."
Before the boy's reflexes could kick in, the inspector's palm aided by his brute strength had made a heavy impression on his cheek. The boy loses his balance and falls face-front to the ground. The mark is so distinct that it looked as if some one had painted his cheek with red.
"Now go ahead and register a complaint motherf****r , you have no idea whom you are messing with. When I put you behind the bars on charges of drug dealing and your old man here for pimping you'd realize that you should have simply walked away, but then it would be too late. Now, f*** off before I beat the sh** out of you both!"
The man, stunned by the turn of events, drags his son towards the car, pushes him in, closes the door, the son still trembling with rage. The man walks back to the inspector and tries to pacify - "Sir, please forgive my son, he is just a kid, please give our papers and let us go, he cannot miss his training."
"Talk some sense into him. If he behaves in this manner at work, the company will kick him out. And what bloody training is that you keep whining about?"
"Sir, IPS officers' training at National Police Academy, Hyderabad. He had cleared the Civil Services Exam only recently and is selected for Indian Police Service."
The Inspector starts sweating profusely
